Iconic Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas was given a more noble departure from Real Madrid.

After his solitary appearance before the media on Sunday, reading a pre-written farewell statement amidst tears for leaving the club of his life, Iker Casillas received the Bernabeu send-off he thoroughly deserved on Monday.

The first order of events was another press conference, this time accompanied by under-fire Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, who suggested in comments via Marca: "Iker wanted a simple and austere departure" regarding the appearance by the iconic goalkeeper, the previous day.

"Iker is leaving us because it's his wish." Florentino pointed out, underlining: "Nobody at Real Madrid has asked him to leave the club." Following speculation in the Spanish media, that the supremo has been trying to engineer the goalkeeper's departure for some time.

He continued: "We received an offer (from FC Porto) and he asked us to evaluate that offer. Casillas has earned the right for the club to make the effort of listening. I understand Iker when he wants to start a new stage in his career. I would have liked him to finish his career at Real Madrid, but I comprehend and understand."

Strongly denying any rift with the 34-year-old star, Florentino insisted: "I'm used to the criticism. There are people who utilise anything to prejudice me, not Real Madrid. This is the most prestigious institution in the world."

"I have a great relationship with Iker. He's never created any problems at this club and his attitude has always been exemplary."

Florentino then acknowledged: "The Real Madrid fans recognise Casillas as one of the most important players in the history of the club." Whilst also confirming: "We will pay great tribute to Casillas."

"We've spoken with FC Porto and we've talked about playing a match on 12th August for the Bernabeu Trophy. We've signed a contract to that effect and this encounter will be celebrated as soon as possible."

For his part, Casillas repeated the sentiments he'd already shared on Sunday, highlighting: "I'll remain with the best moments and with all the titles won."

"I give my thanks to all the Real Madrid fans who have always supported me. To those with whom there have been any differences, truthfully I'm sorry."

"I'm one more Madridista and whenever I can, I'll always come here to support Real Madrid. I try to take the Madridismo name with me wherever I go."

Inside the stadium itself, fans eagerly awaited the arrival of Casillas on the pitch. When he appeared, the Spain captain was greeted with great affection, getting the farewell he so richly deserved.

Perhaps the best indication of just how influential he's been for Real Madrid, the nineteen trophies Casillas has helped his team to win over the years, were there on the pitch, ready and waiting for him to take his place of honour alongside.
