The Belgian international joined Spurs in an £11.5 million deal last week.
Toby Alderweireld’s capture for Spurs has been lauded by fans, pundits and the media alike, as being a fanastic piece of business.
“Toby Alderweireld is a great new signing for Tottenham. He is just the kind of player we need at the club.”
The 26-year old arrives at a club with plenty of familiar faces, given Spurs’ considerable Belgian contingent, and Roberts feels his relationship with a current Spurs centre-back bodes well for next season.
“He has already played alongside Jan Vertonghen in the Ajax defence so that should be a great combination and partnership at the back,” wrote Roberts on Kicca.
The former Spurs hardman, who appeared 209 times for the club in the successful eighties era, knows a thing or two about a winning mentality on the pitch and he sees those qualities in Spurs’ new arrival.
“Toby also looks like a winner and leader on the pitch and you can never have enough players like that.”
Much like Roberts himself, Alderweireld is comfortable at centre-back or in a defensive midfield role and Spurs fans will be hopeful his arrival can bring about a change in the club’s defensive performance.
Spurs conceded the most goals in the top 13 last season, with 53, but have added to their defence this summer and will surely look to improve on that record next season.
