The experienced and versatile defender hasn’t held back with thoughts on the Rams winning every competitive game they play under the guidance of new manager Paul Clement.
However, he’s admitted that there are going to be blips along the way, which will create testing and crucial periods for the club’s players, as they look to secure promotion into the Premier League next year.
“We’re in this game to win and we want to win every game. That’s not going to happen, but we are going to give everything when it comes round to August and the start of the season,” he told dcfc.co.uk.
“Up until that we are still trying to get fit and get used to the tactics that the boss is trying to get us to understand.”
Aims must stay realistic
Baird’s ambition is admirable but the aims for next season have to be kept realistic and achievable.
The Championship season is a very long campaign and Derby showed last season, not everything will always going according to plan as the club slide away from the top of the table, eventually falling outside the top six in the division.
The testing periods
The testing periods will come when that first competitive defeat happens under Clement and it will be interesting to see how the players respond.
Individuals like Baird are certainly going to be important, because they need to work hard to ensure that players don’t let their heads drop or feel they have let anyone down because a defeat has happened.
Derby can certainly win promotion this season, but it’s not going to be a simple or easy task.
