Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld explained on Spurs TV why he feels he’s got an advantage with his move to White Hart Lane.
The dust has settled on the Belgian becoming the latest signing under Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and he feels he’s well equipped to make an instant impact at the North London club.
“Yeah, I’ve got the experience of having played one year in the Premier League – I feel very confident to help the team now with Tottenham – I have that experience now and I know what to expect from the Premier League and it will be an advantage,” he explained to Spurs TV.
How does his experience of the Premier League help?
Alderweireld’s experience of the Premier League with Southampton last season is important, because he already knows what to expect from the division.
He knows what he can expect from strikers looking to get the better of him in the middle of the back four.
He will be experienced with the sort of direct and more patient systems, which different sides use in the Premier League and will have areas based on last season, which he’ll be looking to work on and improve.
It reduces any notion or need for a settling in period and that should help the Tottenham back four to settle quickly, giving the club the best possible chance of securing the right results over the first few weeks of the season.
It’s also significant that he’s already got a very good relationship with Jan Vertonghen, which has developed from the Belgian international setup, as well as good relationships with other Tottenham players, which all adds up to making him feel comfortable and encouraging him to produce his best.
