We have to add goals from midfield, says West Ham manager Slaven Bilic

Bilic's first game in charge as Hammers boss on Saturday gave the Croatian plenty of food for thought.

New West Ham United boss Slaven Bilic has identified a key area the Hammers must improve on next season if they are to build upon last term’s twelfth place finish.

Speaking to the club’s official website following a 3-3 draw with Peterborough United on Saturday, Bilic said: “It is always good to see the strikers get among the goals. It is good for their confidence to keep scoring goals and we have to add more goals from midfield than we scored last year.

“That was missing and we cannot just rely on strikers. It is very important that people like Mark, Pedro, Kevin score their share of goals.”

Bilic has his work cut out to get those three players mentioned banging in the goals, however, considering their output last season.

Mark Noble managed two goals in his 28 league appearances, while Kevin Nolan only notched once in 29 outings. New signing Pedro Obiang didn’t fare much better for Sampdoria in Serie A, registering three times in his 34 games.

Anticipation has been building around West Ham this summer and if Bilic can bring the best out of the likes of Noble and Nolan, as well as integrating their high-profile signings, the Hammers squad begins to take on an exciting form.

Dmitri Payet and Pedro Obiang represent top quality additions, while Angelo Ogbonna will be a force if he can rediscover the form that tempted Juventus into purchasing him two years ago.

All the signs point to a pivotal season in West Ham's recent history and if fortune favours the Irons, a new era of success could be about to arrive just in time for the Olympic Stadium move.
