Former Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo was lucky not to have caused serious damaged to Southampton star Sadio Mané .

Former Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo was on a mission to impress the Valencia coaching staff on Saturday after making his loan spell at the Mestalla Stadium permanent.

The Spanish international spent just one full season with the Citizens, but an inability to establish himself as a first-team star prompted a swift return to Spain with Valencia last summer, initially on loan.

The La Liga giants faced off against a decent Southampton side in Austria, a semi-final of sorts in a pre-season Audi Quattro Cup also containing Werder Bremen and hosts Red Bulls Salzburg.

The Spanish side triumphed over the Saints 1-0 due to Pablo Piatti’s solitary goal, though the main talking point of the match came via Negredo and his nasty-looking challenge on Sadio Mané.

Southampton’s Senegalese international was involved in a fairly eventful match, his every touch being met with displeasure from the Austrian crowd for his decision to leave Salzburg for the Premier League last summer.

Yet, the whistles soon turned into a hush when he was caught late from the Valencia striker, as per the photo it certainly didn’t look good and could have resulted in a possible broken ankle.

Fortunately, the 23-year-old was back on his feet and able to continue, a sigh of relief for boss Ronald Koeman who will be counting on his winger to be ready for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
