Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord have today confirmed on their Twitter account that midfielder Jordy Clasie will not feature in their upcoming friendly matches as he looks to discuss a possible summer transfer.
The Netherlands midfielder has been linked with a move to Premier League side Southampton throughout the summer window, with reports suggesting the 24-year-old will be a replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin, who looks set to join Manchester United.
Saints chief Ronald Koeman confirmed earlier in May that Clasie is a player on his radar and talk of a switch to St Mary's is now likely to intensify after the Eredivisie side pulled him out their pre-season squad to play German club Fortuna.
Jordy Clasie speelt vanmiddag niet tegen Fortuna Düsseldorf. De reden is dat er concreet serieuze belangstelling is getoond voor de captain.— Feyenoord Rotterdam (@Feyenoord) July 12, 2015
"Jordy Clasie will not play against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Sunday. The reason is that concrete interest has been shown for the captain from another club," Feyenoord tweeted from their official account.
"The club and player have therefore agreed that he will not play as long as talks on a possible transfer are ongoing."
Clasie made 31 Eredivisie appearances last season for Feyenoord, scoring twice and assisting a further five goals. He completed 83% of his total passes throughout the campaign, while finding success in 78% of his attempted take ons.
Having previously worked together when Koeman was manager of the Dutch giants, the now Southampton head coach understands the quality of the Feyenoord man, who could form a steely partnership with Victor Wanyama at the heart of the clubs' midfield.
