According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham are prepared to re-enter the race for Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin, following latest news that Manchester United have all but wrapped up a deal for veteran Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.
The France international looked set for a move to Old Trafford after Arsenal pulled out of the running for the France midfielder, but Schweinsteiger's Manchester United switch has thrown the Southampton star's own move north into doubt.
It has been suggested that Schneiderlin is Spurs chief Mauricio Pochettino's first choice midfield target, but with interest from the top four clubs, the Argentine's chances of landing the Frenchman looked increasingly remote.
However, based on reports from Sky Sports that Manchester United's interest in the Frenchman had cooled, and following confirmation on the BBC website that the Red Devils had agreed a deal for Schweinsteiger, Pochettino apparently believes his chances of signing the highly-rated midfielder have increased.
Would Morgan Schneiderlin join Tottenham?
Having previously stated his desire to play in the Champions League, it is unlikely Schneiderlin will opt for a move to White Hart Lane over Manchester United or Arsenal.
The allure of elite European football will surely ultimately prove a deal-breaker in any move he makes. However, he could be tempted by the prospect of challenging for a top four finish with the Lilywhites.
It would perhaps represent a move sideways for now, but the ambition show by the club - with plans for its new 61,000 capacity stadium - could be enough to convince Schneiderlin to put a hold on his dream for another season.
He staged a dramatic U-turn when expressing his desire to leave St. Mary's last season, so who's to say he won't settle for Europa League football this time round.
