The 34-year-old shot-stopper’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu has been heavily speculated this summer following his indifferent form.
Similar to former Barcelona custodian Victor Valdes, a switch to a fellow La Liga outfit would not be under consideration and initial rumours linked Casillas with a move to AS Roma, as per Spanish paper AS.
However, Portuguese giants Porto swiftly made their move and after Madrid decided they could make contact with Casillas, the club’s skipper’s mind was made up: his Madrid career was over.
Negotiations have been lengthy, but the club’s official website announced on Saturday night that an agreement between all parties had been struck, with a press conference scheduled for Sunday.
Casillas leaves Madrid as one of their most recognised players in history, having won five La Ligas, three Champions Leagues, two Copa Del Reys and two Spanish Super Cups.
