Liverpool reportedly tracking Fiorentina centre-back Stefan Savic

Could Liverpool add another central defender to their ranks?

According to a report from Spanish newspaper AS, Liverpool are interested in signing Fiorentina defender Stefan Savic this summer.

The 24-year-old Montenegrin international used to be on the books at Manchester City but his first spell in the Premier League did not go according to plan. However, he put his disappointing time at the Etihad Stadium behind him to become one of Serie A’s most impressive centre-backs, racking up 108 appearances for Fiorentina to date.

That has seen him reportedly attract a lot of attention, and AS claims Liverpool are one of the sides monitoring his progress.

The report claims Spanish club Atletico Madrid want to sign the player but that they are aware of competition from England.

Liverpool have a number of centre-backs on their books but their back-line came in for plenty of criticism last season, particularly the performances of big-money signing Dejan Lovren.

Martin Skrtel has recently signed a new deal at the club and the Reds also have Mamadou Sakho, Kolo Toure and youngster’s Joe Gomez and Tiago Ilori, but Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will know the importance of having strength in depth as he bids to get back into the top four and win some much-needed silverware.

Savic played 41 times for Fiorentina last season and he has been capped 29 times for Montenegro.

With Toure’s time in the game drawing to a close and Gomez and Ilori both predominantly for the future, a move for the 24-year-old would make sense, especially if Lovren continues to struggle leaving just Sakho and Skrtel as reliable, regular options.
