Could Liverpool be closing in on signing the prolific German international on loan.
The Reds’ Italian striker has failed to live up to expectations since arriving at Anfield last summer, scoring just four goals in 28 appearances.
In contrast, German international Gomez scored 10 goals and provided four assists in 32 games for the Italian club, while some minor injuries prevented him from appearing more regularly and potentially adding to that tally in the process.
Liverpool have added Danny Ings to their strike-force already this summer while £29million signing Roberto Firmino also ensures plenty of goals if he continues on his current trajectory.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will also be hoping that Daniel Sturridge has an injury-free campaign which will be a huge boost for the club’s hopes of challenging for silverware and a top-four finish.
But adding Gomez for the ineffective Balotelli could also prove to be a wonderful piece of short-term business, especially when you consider the 30-year-old has scored 249 club goals in his career to date.
The majority of those came at Bayern Munich – 113 to be precise – and if Liverpool can get Balotelli off their books for a season it could be the best option for all concerned.
