New Barcelona signing Arda turan has told reporters that he will talk with his new teammates before choosing his shirt number at the club, Diario Sport reveal.
The Turkish international is the La Liga champions’ second summer signing, following Aleix Vidal’s decision to trade Sevilla for the Nou Camp early last month.
It’s a signing which has gone down well in Spain, and one which has been deemed as necessary following the departure of club legend Xavi, who made a surprise switch to Qatar.
The former skipper leaves behind the number six shirt behind, one which he has successfully carried for a number of years. Turan, given his status as a big money signing, is expected to take it up.
However, the former Atletico Madrid man has revealed he will ask for his teammates’ opinions beforehand, while making his intentions clear he has no intention of trying to replace the departed Xavi.
“The number is not important for me, I am just here to play for Barca. I will talk to the players and the team and I will choose an available number,” he said.
“Nobody can replace Xavi because he is great, not only for Barca, but he was an idol all over the world. I'm a different player, I will try my best but I won't be Xavi.”
Should Arda Turan take up the number six shirt?
While it’s certainly a tough act to follow, somebody at Barcelona has to don the number six shirt and Turan seems the ideal candidate, both in stature and playing style.
The former Galatasaray star will spend the first six months of his stay away from first-team duties due to the club’s transfer ban, but from January onwards there is no doubt he will feature on a regular basis.
