A player once tipped for big things at Leeds United is now said to be training with the League One side following his Elland Road exit.
The 22-year-old was one of a number of players who left Elland Road earlier this summer, with the club opting not to extend their contracts.
The most high-profile departures were Aidy White and Rodolph Austin, but Thompson’s exit was surprising in its own way.
The former Everton youth player earned a professional contract at Leeds back in 2011 and he had the talent to turn out 11 times for the Whites’ first-team when he was only 18.
At the time it looked like the defensive midfielder would have a bright future at Elland Road, but despite a successful loan spell at Bury soon after Thompson would appear just once for Leeds in the next two campaigns.
Thompson’s is a case of what might have been, and if the Walsall Advertiser’s claim is true it will be interesting to see if the player can rebuild his career in League One.
He certainly has the talent, and he still has age on his side. It is just a shame that a player who promised much as a teenager is still searching for his place in the footballing landscape four years later.
During his spell in the Leeds first-team Thompson played at right-back, centre-back, central midfielder and on the left wing – a jack of all trades but hopefully in time he will become a master of one.
