Report: Roma enter race for Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic

Asmir Begovic Stoke V Arsenal

The goalkeeper has been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, and the Italians are the latest to join the hunt.

Serie A side Roma are interested in a deal for Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

The Giallorossi are keen to add a new goalkeeper this summer as they look to improve their squad ahead of next season, and have identified Begovic as an ideal recruit.

The Bosnian keeper looks almost certain to leave the Potters this summer as he has just one season left on his current contract and is as yet to sign a new deal, with it believed that he is keen to play football at a higher level than what is currently on offer at the Britannia.

That is something that Roma could certainly offer, with them having qualified for the Champions League last season and being title challengers with Juventus for large parts of the campaign.

However, interest in Begovic is high, with both Chelsea and Manchester United thought to be keen on the goalkeeper, according to TMW.

Roma a better choice than Chelsea or Manchester United?

If he is determined to leave Stoke this summer, a move to Italy would make sense ahead of joining either of the Premier League sides.

At Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, he would be little more than a replacement for departed Petr Cech, and unlikely to replace current number one Thibaut Courtois.

As things stand, he would also find himself in a similar situation at Old Trafford, with David de Gea the undisputed number one, although if he should leave, then a first team spot would open up. United, though, are likely to target a bigger name than Begovic to fill that void.

That leaves Roma as the perfect choice, with first team football guaranteed, with the added bonus of Champions League football thrown into the mix.
