Report: Newcastle United face competition from Spain for prolific striker target Bas Dost

Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Wolfsburg star Bas Dost.

According to a report in the German paper Kicker, Newcastle United face competition from Spain for prolific Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost.

The Dutch international had a stunning campaign in front of goal last season, scoring 16 Bundesliga goals from a total of just 39 shots, a European-high conversion rate of 41%.

His performances attracted the interest of Newcastle United, as per a report in the Mirror in May, and the Magpies have seemingly edged closer to a transfer for the striker over the past six weeks.

However, fresh reports from Germany state that Steve McClaren’s men aren’t alone in eyeing a deal for Dost, with alleged interest from an unknown La Liga outfit coming to the fore.

"Despite his strong second half of the season, Bas Dost’s future at VfL Wolfsburg is uncertain. Newcastle United is still in pole position, but there is now also a Spanish club interested,” Kicker report.

Should Newcastle United push the boat out to sign Bas Dost?

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren may need to make a big decision soon; push ahead with a firm offer or start seeking alternative striker targets.

Dost, 26, had a wonderful goal scoring campaign last season and is very much a centre-forward suited to playing in McClaren’s preferred system of one up front and two wider forwards.

However, the longer the transfer saga lingers, the Magpies’ chances of acquiring him become less likely and they can’t afford to enter the start of the season without a recognised goal scorer.
