Middlesbrough are attempting to sign Espanyol’s Christian Stuani, reports claim.

As per a report in the Barcelona-based paper Diario Sport, Middlesbrough have launched an ambitious bid to sign Espanyol attacker Christian Stuani.

The Uruguay international found himself in and out of the side last season, starting 15 La Liga games while making another 22 appearances off the bench, scoring 12 goals.

Boro have been scouring the market this summer as they look to bounce back from their Championship play-off final defeat and go one better in the upcoming campaign.

Boss Aitor Karanka has plenty of knowledge of the Spanish top-flight and fresh reports claim he is looking to make a move in the market, offering in the region of £2.9 million for the 28-year-old.

“The English club has offered in the region of €4 million [£2.9m] to sign the player. Should Stuani accept the offer, he would practically double his current Espanyol salary,” Diario Sport claim.

Who is Espanyol attacker Christian Stuani?

Starting his career in his home nation with Danubio, Stuani made the move to Europe in 2007 after penning a four-year deal with then Italian top-flight side Reggina.

Predominantly a striker, the 6ft 1inch attacker can play in a number of positions in the final third, with four of his appearances last season seeing him operate just behind the main striker.

He made his international debut in 2012, and featured for Uruguay during their 2-1 win over England in last summer’s World Cup campaign in Brazil.

Stuani would represent a terrific coup for Boro, and one which would arguably propel the Riverside outfit to rival Derby County as outright favourites for the Championship title.
