Report explains why Stewart Downing could miss Peterborough friendly

Downing Liverpool

Former Aston Villa and Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing has been linked with a move from West Ham United to Middlesbrough.

West Ham United midfielder Stewart Downing will miss the pre-season friendly match against Peterborough United away from home on Saturday, according to GazetteLive.

It has been reported by the British publication that the England international is unlikely to travel with Slaven Bilic’s squad due to an impending move to Championship outfit Middlesbrough.

According to the report, Downing is waiting for permission from the Hammers to travel to the North-East in order to negotiate personal terms and undergo a medical with his former club.

The GazetteLive claims that the former Aston Villa and Liverpool player has told Bilic and the West Ham board that he wants to leave this summer, and that he wants to join only Middlesbrough.

Interesting move

Downing did well for West Ham last season, scoring six goals and creating 85 chances in 37 Premier League appearances.

The 30-year-old has been an important player for the Hammers for the past two seasons, and it is interesting that he (reportedly) wants to leave.

Middlesbrough are in the Championship at the moment, which means that it will actually be a step down for Downing if he returns to Boro.
