The Seattle Sounders right-back bagged week 18's award thanks to his spectacular late winner against D.C. United.
Tyrone Mears opened his account for the Seattle Sounders in fairly stunning fashion last Friday night – so stunning that it earned the former Derby County and Burnley defender MLS goal of the week honours.
With the Sounders drawing 0-0 at home with Supporters’ Shield leaders D.C. United heading into the 88th-minute of the match, the right-back came up with a spectacular long-range blast to hand his side all three points.
His late-winner was also impressive enough to win him Week 18’s Goal of the Week award by a landslide margin, taking 56.02 per cent of the votes to beat Orlando City SC captain Kaka [18.35%] to top spot.
Having made the move across the Atlantic in the winter to replace now-Tottenham Hotspur defender DeAndre Yedlin in the Sounders line-up, Mears has so proven an inspired signing through his first 18 appearances.
The Englishman had featured just 32 times for Bolton Wanderers between 2011 and 2014 due to a career-threatening leg break, but he has now started all but one league game for his new club after getting a full pre-season under his belt.
With his fitness problems behind him, there is a strong argument to make that he has not just been an upgrade over Yedlin but also one of the league’s best full-backs in 2015, earning the praise of his Seattle teammates in the process.
“I think all year long he’s been a solid contributor to this team,” goalkeeper Troy Perkins told the Seattle Times following Friday night’s win. “He’s filled a major hole that was left after last season here. He provides a lot of calmness, you know?
“He’s never wound up, and he’s never over exuberant. He’s scored goals like that in training every day. So to see him do on the field and get his first goal was great.”
