The highly-rated Senegalese midfielder arrives from Lille on a four-year deal to likely replace Manchester City-linked Fabian Delph.
With Fabian Delph reportedly set to complete an £8 million switch to Manchester City this weekend, Aston Villa have moved fast to snap up their departing captain’s replacement.
On Friday evening, the club confirmed the signing of Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye from French club Lille for a fee believed to be around £9 million, as Tim Sherwood prepares for life without his talismanic skipper [h/t BBC].
The 25-year-old, who has 24 international caps to his name, has penned a four-year deal at Villa Park and arrives in England having forged a reputation as one of the top emerging talents in Ligue 1.
With 176 total appearances for Lille over the past five seasons, the defensive midfielder had his most impressive spell of form last term, recording three goals and four assists in 44 matches, while also starting all three of Senegal’s group games at the 2015 African Cup of Nations.
His impressive performances had attracted the interest of Marseille and Southampton in recent weeks [h/t Daily Mail] but Villa’s persistence managed to push the deal through to make him their third new summer signing after Micah Richards and goalkeeper Mark Bunn.
Amid an eventful week for comings and goings at the club, here is how the claret and blue faithful reacted on Twitter to the arrival of the man who looks set to serve as Etihad-bound Delph’s successor.
