Burnley legend comments on Derby County’s interest in Jason Shackell

Burnley legend Willie Irvine believes the club should do everything in its power to keep Jason Shackell from joining Derby County.

Former Burnley and Preston North End striker Willie Irvine told the Lancashire Telegraph just how important it is to keep hold of club captain Jason Shackell amid interest from Derby County.

The 72-year-old, who has a proud history with Burnley, said the Clarets must do all they can to ignore the advances of a ‘very persistant’ Paul Clement.

‘’Now all we need is to make sure Jason Shackell stays,’’ said Willie Irvine. ‘’It’s a case of so far so good, with Derby County having a £2million bid for our skipper turned down and the manager saying it will be him who decides if anyone goes.

‘’I feel the new head coach at Derby, Paul Clement, is very persistant. We surely can’t let Shackell go though. He is the backbone of our defence and would be a great loss to the first XI.’’

Will Derby eventually get their man in the end?

As with any deal in football, money talks.

Derby have spent a good amount of money already this summer, with the BBC reporting Tom Ince’s signing broke the club’s record transfer fee, but may need to dig deep for Shackell.

With just a year left on his deal, the Burnley captain will no doubt have in his head where he wants to play football next season and will either sign a new deal with the Lancashire club or push for a move elsewhere.

The 32-year-old is coming into the twilight of his career and will view his next contract as his last big one and will want to ensure that he makes the right choice
