Steve McClaren hinted that a couple of players were close to arriving, with two individuals particularly closely linked this week.
“It's about getting the right players here," he said. "There has been a lot of speculation and we are close on one or two. But in the transfer market, you can be close or you can be miles away."
McClaren has made it clear that he isn't just thinking of this summer's transfer window when it comes to bringing players into the club, being quoted by the Chronicle as saying Magpies supporters would be excited if they knew the targets the former England boss is pursuing.
“We don’t just go short term with this transfer window, we look at the next window and the next one," McClaren told the Chronicle.
“We have a great opportunity in the next three windows if we get the recruitment right.
“I can understand if there is negativity but if I was a supporter and I knew what I know, I’d be very excited about the future.”
The two unnamed players could come at a princely sum of £28 million according to the Telegraph, who, as have many other publications, say Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic are close to a deal.
Newcastle continue to be linked with the PSV and Netherlands attacking midfielder despite interest from Everton, with speculation in the Sunderland Echo that the 24-year-old has decided to head to the North-East.
He could be joined at the club by Anderlecht striker Mitrovic, who has "opened talks" with the St James's Park outfit regarding a move according to the Chronicle.
There was little progress in moves for QPR striker Charlie Austin or Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel, though the Chronicle did state that the Premier League champions would make a decision on a Newcastle approach for the young Dutchman in the coming days.
