Reported Leeds United target Birkir Bjarnason has joined FC Basel from Pescara on a three-year contract, according to the Swiss club’s official website.
The Iceland international midfielder was one of the best players in Serie B last season, and he has been rewarded for his impressive performances with a move to the Swiss champions.
According to a report on Gianlucadimarzio.com in June, Championship outfit Leeds were interested in signing the 27-year-old Bjarnason.
Move makes sense
Leeds are one of the biggest clubs of England and regularly attract over 20,000 spectators to Elland Road for their home games.
However, the Whites are a Championship outfit and have not played in the Premier League since 2004.
Bjarnason was playing in the second tier of Italian football last season, and it did not make much sense for him to move to a club in the second tier of English football.
Basel are a huge club in Switzerland and won the Swiss Super League last season, which means that they stand a chance of playing in the Champions League during the 2015-16 campaign.
