He said: “For once, the salary offer was not so far away for Idrissa. But he believes Villa can be a springboard for him. The Premier League, it has become the NBA of Europe. Everyone wants to play, even in small teams.”
Although stating that the Marseille offer for Gueye was similar to Villa’s, Labrune has criticised the financial strength of the Premier League, as well as stating that Gueye will likely not be at the Midlands' club for very long.
He expects the Lille midfielder to sign with Villa as a way to get spotted by bigger teams, before moving upwards to play in the Champions League.
The Senegalese international, 25, has already played in the Europa League with Lille, and he turned down Marseille - also in the Europa League - to move to Villa.
Labrune is well aware of the power in the Premier League, even of the so-called smaller clubs, but believes that, even if able to offer more money than other European countries, many teams are still only seen as a stepping stone to greater things.
