The former Manchester City defender has joined on a free transfer and Sherwood is clearly pleased with the addition.
The former Manchester City player agreed to join Villa on a free transfer last month having spent last season on loan in Serie A with Fiorentina.
He was once considered a hot prospect for the future at the Etihad, and a potential captain for both City and England, but things did not work out that way and he found himself surplus to requirements in Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
That has worked out nicely for Villa, who have secured a player in his prime on a free transfer, and Sherwood has highlighted just what he will bring.
“He’s a Premier League champion, he’s at a great age and he’s hungry for success and that’s what we need.”
A good signing with vital experience
Richards’ experience in the game is likely to prove vital to Villa next season, as Sherwood looks to make them a side to contend with.
It is a relatively youthful squad at Villa Park, with a number of youngsters having been blooded by Paul Lambert previously and Jack Grealish the rising star under Sherwood.
Indeed, the need for experience was something Lambert looked to address last summer when he brought in players such as Kieran Richardson, and given they have lost Ron Vlaar this summer, Richards’ addition makes even more sense.
