Wijnaldum looks one step closer to Newcastle, despite interest from Sunderland, West Ham and Everton.
A fully-capped Dutch international, and a key figure behind PSV claiming the Eredivisie title last season, signing Wijnaldum would be a real coup for Newcastle, and convincing him to move to Tyneside could be hard.
He would be leaving a Champions League team to sign with the club who only survived in the Premier League on the final day, and sporting direct Lee Charnley has been in the Netherlands to secure his signature.
One factor in convincing him to sign is his playing time, as Wijnaldum will not be guaranteed silverware so will want personal growth. Siem de Jong already plays for the Magpies, and as both are attacking minded midfielders, the PSV man wanted to know that he will be a consistent selection.
These fears have been allayed, with Newcastle chiefs confirming that both are guaranteed football as part of the Magpies’ attacking unit next season, and that looks to have moved a deal to sign Wijnaldum one step closer.
Final talks have got to be concluded before the transfer can go through, but it looks as if Newcastle are on the brink of wrapping up their first signing of the summer.
