HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Keane's season long deal with the newly promoted Championship side includes a recall option.
Keane would compete for places up front with Joe Garner and the recently signed Jermaine Beckford.
He is a former England under-21 international for who high hopes were expected at Old Trafford, before his development was hampered by a serious knee injury two years ago.
Keane spent the last few months of 2014/15 on loan at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, and a year earlier had a brief spell at QPR. He has a record of 25 goals in 50 games for Manchester United's under-21 side, and netted three times in 13 games for the Owls.
The 22-year-old's twin brother is Burnley centre-back Michael Keane, who joined the Lancashire side permanently last season.
