The former Liverpool assistant manager has aired his view on Twitter.
Indeed, Thompson, a former defender and assistant manager with the Reds, feels the Merseyside outfit must take control of the situation 'for football's sake.'
According to the Guardian, Sterling failed to report for training on Wednesday and cited illness as his reason, with the player believed to no longer want to work with Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.
And, on Twitter, Thompson aired a view that suggests he feels the player has too much power as the situation currently stands.
If Sterling is still at LFC by Sunday ,for footballs sake they must make him travel on pre season tour— Phil Thompson (@Phil_Thompson4) July 8, 2015
A third offer is expected to be made and the 20-year-old is widely anticipated to end up at the Etihad Stadium.
It would be interesting to see Sterling travel with the Reds on pre-season tour but, with the young winger so intent on leaving, would it really be the best stance for Liverpool to take?
