Southampton’s failure to secure the services of Toby Alderweireld on a permanent basis has come as a blow to the club, especially given their seemingly strong negotiating position heading into the summer.
The Saints are believed to have had first option on a deal and a buy-out clause included within his loan terms last season, yet Tottenham Hotspur appear to have been the more proactive party and have now completed the deal, as confirmed on their official website.
Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier took to Twitter to give his take:
Disappointed to see Toby sign for Spurs but not end of the world #wemarchon— Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7) July 8, 2015
Saints fans will be hoping Le Tissier's outlook rings true in what is another summer of transition for the club. After losing 50% of their impressive back four, in Nathaniel Clyne and Alderweireld, attention must now turn to the rebuilding job.
Meanwhile, yet another centre-back partner for Jose Fonte is now required following the losses of Dejan Lovren and Alderweireld in successive years.
The Southampton board and scouting network will have their work cut out in the coming days and weeks but will be buoyed by their recovery last year following the sales of several key players.
