Southampton have missed out on the signing of defender Toby Alderweireld, after the Belgian international clinched his move to Tottenham Hotspur.
The centre-back played on loan at Southampton in 2014/15, and impressed, enjoying playing regular football after struggling on the bench during Atletico Madrid's title winning season.
The Saints were in pole position to sign him, but were beaten to it by Tottenham, where he links up with international colleagues Jan Vertonghen and Nacer Chadli.
It is a tough blow for Southampton to take, with Alderweireld a key part of their solid defence last season, especially with the club selling right-back Nathaniel Clyne to Liverpool last week.
The club showed last summer their resilience at bouncing back from losing key players, with Ronald Koeman shrewd in the transfer market.
They will have to be equally as clever this time around, as the reaction from Southampton supporters illustrates how highly regarded the loanee was.
A number have expressed their frustration with the club's inability to close the deal, as well as the defender choosing against staying put.
Here is a look at how fans reacted on Twitter to the news...
At least Yoshida is loyal... we've lost alderweireld, Clyne, shaw, lovren and chambers in the space of 2 years!? so frustrating #saintsfc— RhysKibble (@Rhys_Kibble) July 8, 2015
Disappointed about Alderweireld. Will be hard to replace him, but I'm sure #saintsfc will manage to do so.— Kirstie (@Kirstie_SFC) July 8, 2015
#Saintsfc made a real mess of the Alderweireld situation, sometimes their cautious approach to things is very frustrating.— Briggsy (@Briggsy_AJ) July 8, 2015
Never been more gutted about #saintsfc not getting a player than I am about Toby Alderweireld :(— Matt Sheppard (@MattJSheppard) July 8, 2015
