Newcastle United confirmed on their official website on Wednesday that winger Sammy Ameobi has not only signed a new contract to stay at St. James' Park, but has been loaned out to Cardiff City.
The 23-year-old wide man played 27 games for the Magpies last season, scoring two goals - and his displays have now earned him a new contract on Tyneside.
However, Ameobi won't be spending next season under new Magpies boss Steve McClaren, as he's instead off to South Wales to join Cardiff City on a season-long loan deal.
The move is seen as an opportunity for Ameobi to go and play football on a regular basis in the Championship, gaining valuable experience and aiding his development.
After hearing about the move, Newcastle striker Ayoze Perez took to Twitter to wish Ameobi luck during his time with Cardiff, adding that he will see the forward next summer upon his return to Newcastle.
What does the future hold for Ameobi?
At 23, Ameobi definitely needs to be out playing games on a weekly basis, and his move to Cardiff now allows him to do just that.
The winger now needs to impress at Cardiff, and a strong season should put him in the reckoning under McClaren for the 2016/17 season, rather than be a pre-cursor for a permanent exit.
It appears that Ameobi still has a long-term future at Newcastle - but the Magpies will be watching him closely next term to see just whether he can be come a key player in the coming years for Newcastle.
