Arsenal have confirmed midfielder Mikel Arteta has signed a new contract extension, via their official website.
The Spaniard is highly regarded by manager Arsene Wenger, despite suffering badly with injuries last season.
The former Everton midfielder has been at Arsenal since 2011, going onto become club captain.
Arsene Wenger told Arsenal's official website: "He’s one of the leaders in the club because he’s the captain of the team. I expect him to contribute much more than last season but he also faces a battle.
"With the number of games we have ahead, we could use his experience, his desire and his quality as it will be vital for next season."
Arteta may no longer be first choice thanks to the emergence of Francis Coquelin, but he adds balance to a young squad, experience which as Arsene Wenger says will be vital over the course of the 2015/16 season.
The 33-year-old is the second veteran midfielder to sign a new deal, following Czech international Tomas Rosicky.
Injuries restricted him to only seven Premier League appearances last season, compared to 31 the previous campaign.
Abou Diaby was released last month, while doubts remain over the future of fellow defensive midfielder Mathieu Flamini.
Questions remain now as to whether Arsene Wenge will look to buy another player in the position this summer, or if he feels he has enough cover now Arteta has re-signed.
Here is a look at how Arsenal fans reacted on Twitter to the deal...

Arteta has done nothing to harm arsenal fans. He won't be in the team week in week out but you need the right balance !— Intelligent Gӧӧner (@jackthegooner1) July 8, 2015

I'm all for loyalty & leadership, but this team has leaders beyond Arteta and neither he nor Rosicky was key to team success in 2015 #AFC— Max Householder (@MaxHouseholder) July 8, 2015
Arteta extends his contract by an year. Good news, however would prefer him as a 3rd choice DM and not 2nd.— Adnan Salman (@adnan2205) July 8, 2015
