Tottenham media round-up: Latest twists in Toby Alderweireld saga

Toby Alderweireld

A selection of the latest stories in the media involving Tottenham Hotspur this Tuesday evening.

The saga surrounding the transfer of Toby Alderweireld seems to have taken a couple of twists today if reports in the media are anything to go by.

The London Evening Standard has reported that the defender underwent a medical examination with Spurs staff on Monday, suggesting that an £11.5 million deal was close.

Alderweireld was on loan at Southampton last season, who had an option to buy as part of the deal, but there appears to have been some agreement where Atletico could pay a fee to the Saints in order to sell him to another club for a higher price.

The Standard cites sources in Spain as saying that Southampton's right to buy the defender has expired amid reports that they may take legal action against the La Liga side.

However, Sky Sports is reporting that Southampton have come in with a fresh bid of around €20 million, the equivalent of £14.39 million, which would mean they are the highest bidder. If that is the case, then a lot could depend on just how advanced discussions are with Tottenham, with Southampton boss Ronald Koeman saying Alderweireld has been very happy at St Mary's.

Away from the transfer market, midfielder Nabil Bentaleb has been looking ahead to next season after signing a new contract at White Hart Lane which commits him to Tottenham until 2020.

Bentaleb is quoted by the official Tottenham website as saying that last season's fifth place finish in the Premier League is a decent platform on which to build for the future.

He said: “We have a young team and we all want to learn but this season we have to show something for the fans. Last season we finished fifth, it’s a good platform and we have to do better now, we have to achieve things to thank the fans who are always behind us.”
