Tomkins suggests there's only one way to consider West Ham's Europa League win

West Ham United defender James Tomkins feels the club's performance in the Europa League qualifiers last week was convincing.

West Ham United defender James Tomkins has told the club’s official website that there is no other way for them to look at the Europa League win against FC Lusitans, than a success.

The Hammers hold a 3-0 advantage heading into the second leg of the qualifying game in Andorra and Tomkins feels the club are in a great position to ensure that they make it through to the next stage of the competition.

“It's always important to get on the scoresheet early on against teams like this, as that makes them quiet straight away,” he told

“We could have got more out of it, but we took the positives. It was the first game back we're still trying to pick up our fitness. A win's a win and 3-0 was quite convincing in the end.”

Early momentum

West Ham were always going to be favourites for the European qualification tie because of the quality they have all over the pitch.

The win won’t be the most impressive they secure this season, but it was an important victory which would have helped to raise the confidence and momentum in the side, as well as allowing individuals to improve their fitness as Tomkins suggests.

Hopefully they can back up the victory with another win before some intense pre-season games ahead of the Premier League returning.

Europa League is vital

The Europa League is very important because of where West Ham are trying to head before their move to the Olympic Stadium at Stratford.

Not only does it create extra financial opportunities for the club, it exposes the players to a higher level of scrutiny and quality, which should only help them to become better players.
