Derby couldn’t improve under old boss Steve McClaren last season, after narrowly missing out on promotion into the Premier League after the play-off final defeat at the hands of QPR two years ago.
However, Ince isn’t predicting more disappointment for the Rams when the competitive action returns and expects the club to make a good fist of things.
“With the squad we have and with the support and the backing we have, there is only one way this club can go,” he told the Derby Telegraph.
“Everyone knows the ambition and the target and I have full belief in this squad.”
“I have come to a team that have had two years of disappointment but we will be looking to make it third time lucky.”
No harm in aiming high
There’s no harm in Derby setting their sights high and making it clear they are going for Premier League promotion.
There’s no harm because the club have a lot going for them and are in good shape following the arrival of Paul Clement as manager.
Clement has improved the squad significantly and while he doesn’t have any experience in terms of managing a side directly, he’s familiar with coaching and balancing a side packed with star players.
Clement can use the disappointment of last season to his advantage, as he looks to fire up the side to ensure that the next time they’re at the top of the Championship table, they don’t slide off the pace as emphatically.
