Southampton have signed the right-back from FC Twente so what do Saints fans have to say about it?
Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has already been busy this summer strengthening his side ahead of another Premier League campaign.
The latest player to arrive at St. Mary’s is 25-year-old Cuco Martina, a player who can operate as a right-back or a centre-back and even has the ability to play in defensive midfield if necessary.
Martina played 39 times for FC Twente last season, including 32 times in the Eredivisie, and he has been capped 20 times by Curacao.
He played predominantly at right-back last season although he was called into action at centre-back on 10 occasions in the league, suggesting that Southampton manager Ronald Koeman sees him as a fine utility player.
Somewhat surprisingly, Martina has only signed a two-year deal at Southampton but with Nathaniel Clyne moving to Liverpool earlier this month, Koeman has identified the player as a potential replacement.
In truth fellow summer signing Cedric Soares is likely to take that role more often than not but there is no harm in having sufficient back-up.
Following the news of Martina’s arrival we took to Twitter to see what Southampton fans thought and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Hopefully Cuco Martina is a hidden gem, haven't heard much but hopefully he'll be great for us #SaintsFC— lucas. (@_lucasedwards_) July 7, 2015
If Cuco Martina has been deemed good enough to join #saintsfc then I trust the clubs judgement.— Paul_C (@lifelongsaint83) July 7, 2015
