Rotherham place price tag on Wigan target Derbyshire

New York Stadium sign, Rotherham

HITC Sport understands Rotherham United have put a £1million price tag on Matt Derbyshire after interest in the striker from Wigan Athletic.

HITC Sport understands from sources close to a potential deal that Wigan Athletic have been told it will cost them £1million to land Rotherham United striker Matt Derbyshire.

As revealed by HITC Sport last week, Wigan have made an enquiry for the former Blackburn Rovers forward as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season in League One.

Gary Caldwell is thought to be an admirer of Derbyshire and sees him as the man who can help fire the Latics to promotion back to the Championship next season.

However, Rotherham are reluctant to lose Derbyshire and have told Wigan that they will only sell the former England Under-21 international for a fee of £1million.

Derbyshire joined Rotherham last summer on a free transfer from Nottingham Forest and he helped them to secure survival in their first season back in the Championship.

Derbyshire scored nine goals in 34 appearances and Rotherham boss Steve Evans is keen to keep him at the New York City Stadium unless his asking price is met.
