Manchester United might have to step their interest up a gear or two, if they're to land talented Ghanaian midfielder Bernard Mensah this summer.
According to Super Deporte, the 20-year-old is also wanted by Valencia, who could have a distinct advantage, given he is represented by Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes, who is considered a key figure in transfer policy at the Spanish club, by owner Peter Lim.
The report claims that around ten days ago, former Porto, Barcelona and Chelsea icon Deco, who now works for the representation company of Mendes, met for talks with officials at Vitoria de Guimaraes.
Following those talks, it is believed Valencia are now very close to reaching an agreement with the Portuguese club, with Mensah valued at around €9 million, or just under £6.4m.
Mensah has quickly established himself as one of the most coveted young talents in European football, having burst onto the scene with Vitoria last season, his debut campaign in the first-team squad.
The midfielder made 30 appearances in the Primera Liga during the 2014-15 campaign, scoring five goals, providing five assists and helping Vitoria achieve an impressive 5th position finish in the table, securing entry into the Europa League.
Those performances were also recognised with a debut in the Ghana national team, which came on 8th June this year in a friendly encounter with Togo. Mensah played 65 minutes of that game and is expected to feature strongly for his country in the future.
It was following that international debut, that the most recent links with Manchester United came about, with the youngster doing his reputation no harm by scoring the winning goal.
Ghanasoccernet subsequently reported that Red Devils scouts were paying close attention to the game, played at the Accra Sports Stadium, and have since suggested that United have been tracking the player for some time, monitoring his progress with Vitoria.
