The future of Toby Alderweireld has progressed to become one of the most drawn out sagas of the summer so far, with both Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur attempting to lay claim to his signature.
A brief refresher: Alderweireld was on loan at Southampton from Atletico Madrid last season -> Tottenham now want to sign him -> Southampton claim they cannot because Atletico failed to invoke a payment cancelling their first option agreement in time.
Now national newspaper The Sun has added a new development into the mix, claiming Toby Alderweireld successfully completed a medical with Tottenham yesterday (Monday). The paper report: "Toby Alderweireld had a Tottenham medical yesterday as Southampton still insist they have first option on him."
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is in Spain negotiating with Atletico Madrid at present, and The Mail reported he had reached an agreement with the Spanish side over a fee, but Southampton's determination to dig in is complicating matters.
Belgian newspaper HLN had reported on Monday morning that the international defender was scheduled for a medical with Spurs the same day.
Southampton boss Ronald Koeman told a press conference later in the afternoon, reported by the Daily Echo, that the Saints were still hopeful of doing a deal themselves, believing Alderweireld is open to a deal and they still believe they are entitled to push through their option to sign him.
