Former Arsenal fan favourite Ray Parlour has suggested on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT, Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has made the right call over appointing Ray Wilkins as his assistant manager.
Sherwood has drafted in Wilkins ahead of next season, injecting some extra experience into the coaching ranks of the club as Aston Villa look to avoid a repeat of the struggles, which plagued the club at times last season.
“He’s a brilliant man to be around and on the pitch itself as a player, he really knew the game. I think Tim has that old head to speak to now and if he needs a bit of advice, Ray is the man to ask. I think the players will really enjoy working with him,” Parlour told talkSPORT.
What difference will Wilkins make to the players?
Wilkins should have a big impact on the entire squad, but especially the midfield when he played himself before he retired.
Aston Villa have some high quality players in the middle of the team who will benefit from his guidance and he’s a good individual for someone like Jack Grealish to be able to learn from.
Wilkins understands the pressure of playing for such a massive football club and he understands midfield play and he’ll have his own ideas over how each Villa midfielder can reinvent himself.
His influence isn’t restricted to the middle of the team because he’s someone that any player in any position can turn to.
He’s got experience of handling some very big egos and dealing with issues away from the pitch which makes him approachable in a productive way, which only creates further benefits.
