Newcastle have been linked with making a move for Joel Matip.
The Chronicle has previously reported that Newcastle have submitted bids to sign Joel Matip from Schalke this summer, and the latest report in the same media outlet suggests that he wants his future decided in the coming days.
It is stated that he is set to hold talks with Schalke boss Andre Breitenreiter very soon, to see whether he figures in his plans next term, or whether a move away will be best for his career.
Matip, 23, is a central defender who has played with Schalke for his entire career, and would do much to improve the weak defensive unit on show at St James’ Park.
He has been a central figure in the Bundesliga club’s plans over recent years, but the appointment of Breitenreiter could end that. If first-team football is not guaranteed, the young Cameroonian international may push through a move for the good of his playing time.
There are no indications that Matip will be cast out by the new boss, but the player himself could want a move to Tyneside regardless of his playing situation. He has only recently returned from injury, and is ready to start turning out in pre-season, with talks expected soon.
It is stated in the report that Matip will be worth roughly £10 million if Newcastle return with another bid for him, and with talks scheduled, the defender’s future should become much clearer in the coming days.
