The talented Tottenham Hotspur youngster has been speaking after signing a new deal.
The 19-year-old made his first-team debut last season, coming off the bench in the Europa League clash with Partizan Belgrade. And while that brief appearance is all Tottenham fans have seen of him so far, big things are expected of the talented teen.
Winks was part of Tottenham’s post-season tour of Malaysia and Australia and he is now back training ahead of what could be his breakthrough campaign at White Hart Lane.
The England under-19 international signed a deal until the summer of 2018 – with the option of an additional year – and he has been speaking about how it felt to be offered a new contract and the opportunities manager Mauricio Pochettino has given him so far.
“I was over the moon when I was told,” Winks told tottenhamhotspur.com about his contract offer. “It didn’t quite sink in straight away, but when everything settled down again I was delighted.”
Winks then went on to talk about the chances he has had so far, especially starting in Malaysia at the end of a tough campaign for his teammates.
“It was encouraging that he (Pochettino) trusted me and I felt like I played well in the game,” Winks said.
With so many players fighting for a first-team place at Tottenham it remains to be seen how many chances Winks will get next season, but considering the amount of matches ahead of them, he can expect to get far more than the three minutes of competitive senior action he has so far.
