Manchester United are preparing a huge transfer offer for Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller, report German channel Sport1.
The fee would be marginally below the club record paid to sign Angel di Maria from Real Madrid for £59.7 million a year ago.
Di Maria has proved an unpredictable player so far, capable of genius but also inconsistent, and is yet to show his best form, despite scoring three goals and providing 10 assists in the Premier League last season.
Thomas Muller is the opposite. He is the epitome of consistency and reliability, a truly stereotypically great German player, who has scored five goals at two consecutive World Cups.
The Van Gaal factor
Muller is a player Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal knows very well, from his spell as Bayern Munich manager.
Van Gaal handed Muller his debut at Bayern, and the German international recently was quoted by ESPN praising his impact on his career.
He said: "Van Gaal also had a huge effect on my development, I am very grateful to him -- he gave me great help and leadership, and he saw something in me as a forward where some others didn't."
Muller has a record of 120 goals and 105 assists in 304 appearances for Bayern Munich. This included 21 goals and 18 assists in 48 games last season.
With Robin van Persie's future in doubt at United, Muller is an outstanding option who would be worth every penny, and still only 25-years-old.
Sport1report their understanding of informal discussions being held between Bayern board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and United vice president Ed Woodward, and it will be fascinating to see if the Red Devils can tempt the German juggernauts into a sale, or if the player himself begins to push for a transfer.
