Avenatti looked set to sign for Cagliari earlier this week, but a report in CagliariNews24 has indicated that the Serie B club have switched their attention to Niccolo Giannetti, currently turning out with La Spezia.
Cagliari were in advanced talks with Avenatti, and were said to be close to agreeing a deal for him, but now they have moved ahead with Giannetti as their prime target, dropping interest in the 22-year-old Uruguayan forward.
This could hand a boost to two English clubs, who are reportedly tracking the young striker ahead of potentially making a summer move for him.
TMW has claimed that Aston Villa and Leeds United are interested in signing the 6ft 5in striker, having been impressed by the potential he has shown in Serie B. During the 2014/15 campaign he netted an impressive 13 goals in 39 games, and although the quality divide between Serie B and English football is large, they clearly believe he has the talents to step up another level.
With the Cagliari deal said to be close to completion, it appeared as if the English duo had missed out on the chance to sign their talented young striker target.
However, the Italian club have chosen to push ahead with a deal for a different target, leaving the door open for Villa or Leeds to formalise their interest and make a concrete approach for Avenatti in the coming weeks.
