The Juventus defender is reportedly set to join the Hammers.
The Hammers have apparently beaten competition from a number of their Premier League rivals for the out of favour Italy defender, paying as much as £7.1 million up front for the player.
If he does turn up at Upton Park, he will likely be paired in central defence with centre-back Winston Reid, who is arguably the first choice for new boss Slaven Bilic.
We decided to compare the two players to see how they match up and see if the New Zealand man is in any danger of losing his first choice status.
|Season||Total Tackle per Game||Interceptions per Game||Total Clearance per Game||Aerial Won per Game||Pass Success Percentage|
Starting with the defender's staple, tackling, the West Ham man comes out on top as he registered 1.8 per game last season compared to Ogbonna’s tally of 1.2. Interceptions are similarly in his favour, with him registering 1.6 per game compared to Ogbonna’s 1.2 per game.
It’s also bad news for the Italy man when it comes to clearances per game and aerial duels won per game as well, with Reid coming out on top in those two categories comfortably compared to the Juventus defender.
It’s not all bad news though, as Ogbonna manages to win when it comes to passing. He registered a successful pass rate of 89.4% last season, with Reid only managing a score of 79.3%.
A comfortable victory for Reid then who it seems will still be the first choice defender next season regardless of Ogbonna’s potential arrival, although perhaps the added competition could force him to up his game even further.
