According to a recent report from Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal to sign Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid, and while there has been no official confirmation as yet, it seems the Belgian press think it is only matter of time.
Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad has published a cartoon depicting Alderweireld and Tottenham’s current Belgian trio of Nacer Chadli, Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen, reimagined as a band called The Spurs.
Sport Witness later posted the image on their official Twitter account and it will be interesting to see if and when the former Southampton loanee does complete his mooted move to White Hart Lane.
The 26-year-old was outstanding for the Saints last season and he would be a brilliant permanent addition to Tottenham’s back-line, able to play with his international teammate Vertonghen in the heart of Spurs’ back-line and potentially also with Chadli and Dembele, if both players remain past the summer.
The latest cartoon may depict the quartet as a band, but it would be no laughing matter if Alderweireld did move to North London. In fact his signing would be one of the best Tottenham have completed in many a year and he could be exactly what they need to push for a top four finish and silverware in the campaigns to come.
