Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has admitted to the club's official YouTube channel that a move to sign Twente defender Cuco Martina is close to completion.
The Saints have already brought in goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, right back Cedric Soares and Spanish forward Juanmi, but manager Koeman is now looking for other reinforcements.
The Daily Mail reported earlier today that Southampton are nearing a move for FC Twente defender Cuco Martina, with Koeman once again going back to the Eredivisie for new signings.
Now, Koeman has spoken to Southampton's official YouTube channel ahead of their pre-season trip to Austria, and whilst he admitted that England international Ryan Bertrand is injured, he also told the press that a move for Martina is close to completion.
"We are interested in him and it's close, it's close," said Koeman. "Ryan had a small surgery in both his knees 10 days ago and will be out for the next coming weeks. The number of defenders we have in the squad is too small, so we need more competition. That player is available for three of the four positions in defence, and so would give us more players for a tough season," he added.
What would Martina offer Southampton?
The Curacao international has spent his entire career in the Netherlands, and has earned a reputation for being a versatile defender who can play at full back and centre back, but is primarily a right back.
With a decent turn of pace and impressive athleticism, Martina could play a key role as a utility man in Southampton's defence, especially with a Europa League campaign on the horizon.
Martina's seemingly imminent arrival may not grab headlines or even excite Southampton fans, but he should play a valuable role under Koeman next season.
