Sunderland are reportedly keen to attract a new winger this week.
The paper suggests that a winger as one of a ‘couple’ of creative additions is a priority for Director of Football Lee Congerton, as manager Dick Advocaat looks to establish an improved squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
Who is the main target?
The Sunderland Echo reports that West Ham’s Stewart Downing is still a key target for the club.
Downing ticks a lot of boxes in terms of what Advocaat will be looking for from any new signing and he has plenty of Premier League experience, which will be vital heading into next season.
However, whether the Hammers will be willing to let Downing go without a fight is extremely doubtful.
Should priorities be in other areas?
Sunderland have already made improvements to their defence with Sebastian Coates secured on a permanent deal and Adam Matthews snapped up from Celtic.
There could be movement up front in the form of Steven Fletcher, who has been linked with a move to Celtic according to the Scottish Herald.
If Fletcher leaves, that creates pressure for the boss to find a suitable replacement alongside other transfers he may have his eye on.
