The Arsenal midfielder picked an ultimate XI of former and current colleagues.
The German midfielder arrived from Madrid in 2013 and has divided critics and fans alike since. While undoubtedly a hugely gifted player, Mesut Ozil's mentality has sometimes been brought into question but his Ultimate XI, posted on the club's official Youtube channel, may give some indication into his mixed form.
The 24-year old clearly enjoyed his surroundings in Spain and there may be a hint of longing for his former team-mates with a whopping 7 out of his ultimate 11 being ex-Madrid colleagues.
Casillas gets the nod in goal with Ozil stating that “he has often demonstrated he belongs among the best goalkeepers in the world”.
Sergio Ramos – “the best centre-back in the world” – and Marcelo – “the most technically gifted defender I’ve seen” – make up one half of the defence.
Pass master Xabi Alonso sits in the middle with Ozil claiming “I’ve never seen another player with his ability to play such fantastic passes.”
World player of the year Ronaldo takes the left wing spot and the Arsenal man cites his goalscoring and ambition as the key factors.
Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria gets the nod on the right due to his ‘technical ability’ and ‘determination’.
Karim Benzema completes the Madrid contigent with Ozil describing him as ‘the most complete striker’.
German team-mates Phillipe Lahm and Jerome Boateng round off the defence while there’s only room for two of his current Arsenal colleagues.
Santi Cazorla sits alongside Xabi Alonso in central midfield, described by Ozil as simply ‘outstanding technically’.
And the final spot, that most important of number 10 roles, goes to Serge Gnabry... because ‘he’s sitting right here.’
