PSV Eindhoven star Georginio Wijnaldum is reportedly close to joining Newcastle.
According to the Daily Mirror, PSV Eindhoven playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum is moving close to a deal with Newcaslte United.
Wijnaldum, 24, struck 18 goals for PSV last season as Phillip Cocu's men clinched the Eredivisie title by a landslide, with the Dutch international midfielder playing a key role in their success.
Now though, having lost star winger Memphis Depay to Manchester United already this summer, Cocu looks set to lose another key player in Wijnaldum.
The Mirror report that the midfielder has snubbed a move to Sunderland, but is now nearing a move to their North East rivals Newcastle.
New manager Steve McClaren has yet to make any signings as Magpies boss, but the report suggests that Wijnaldum could become his first addition in a big summer for Newcastle.
With an alleged £15m fee, Wijnaldum would be a huge, big-money signing for Newcastle, and a possible signal of intent under their new boss - if they can secure the deal.
What would Wijnaldum offer?
Wijnaldum can play as an attacking midfielder or out wide, possessing skill and creativity to be effective behind a striker whilst also having the pace and dribbling ability to be a force out wide.
It's unclear where McClaren would deploy Wijnaldum, but the beauty of signing him is that he's so versatile and can make an impact in the final third regardless of which position he plays.
With a great engine too, Wijnaldum could be the idea signing for Newcastle - and whilst the money involved would be huge, this could be an important signing for the Magpies considering Wijnaldum's quality.
