Olivier Bernard says near mid-table finish should be Newcastle’s aim next season

Olivier Bernard comments on what Newcastle United’s target should be next season.

Olivier Bernard has told talkSPORT that Newcastle United should be aiming for a mid-table finish in the Premier League next season.

The Magpies narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight of English football last season, and former Newcastle defender Bernard does not expect too much from the team during the 2015-16 campaign.

“Nobody expects Newcastle to be in the top ten after the last season, so near mid-table would be good enough,” the former Rangers defender told talkSPORT.

“I don’t think the fans expect much – they won’t be fighting relegation if they get a couple of these players they are being linked with.”

Top-10 finish possible?

Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs of England, but in recent years they have become also-rans in the Premier League.

The Magpies do have a decent team at the moment, and the fans will hope that new head coach Steve McClaren can sign some good players and challenge for a top-10 finish in the Premier League next season.

It will not be easy, though, as there will be many other teams challenging for a top-10 finish.

Perhaps Newcastle will fail to end up in the top 10, but that should be their minimum aim for the 2015-16 campaign.
