The Magpies narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight of English football last season, and former Newcastle defender Bernard does not expect too much from the team during the 2015-16 campaign.
“Nobody expects Newcastle to be in the top ten after the last season, so near mid-table would be good enough,” the former Rangers defender told talkSPORT.
“I don’t think the fans expect much – they won’t be fighting relegation if they get a couple of these players they are being linked with.”
Top-10 finish possible?
Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs of England, but in recent years they have become also-rans in the Premier League.
The Magpies do have a decent team at the moment, and the fans will hope that new head coach Steve McClaren can sign some good players and challenge for a top-10 finish in the Premier League next season.
It will not be easy, though, as there will be many other teams challenging for a top-10 finish.
Perhaps Newcastle will fail to end up in the top 10, but that should be their minimum aim for the 2015-16 campaign.
